Under general supervision of the museum director/curator, the curatorial assistant/registrar prepares exhibitions for display, contributes to the production of exhibitions, and is responsible for all collection-management processes.
Exhibitions (50%):
Manages installations and de-installations during 3-4 exhibition cycles per year. Plans and organizes exhibition-related movement of objects, including incoming and outgoing loans. Directs packing and unpacking, arranges shipping and insurance. Establishes and prepares condition reports and condition report notebooks; prepares damage reports as necessary.
Prepares galleries and exhibition furniture for exhibitions. Directs gallery lighting.
Organizes and supervises the work of contractors, volunteers, students, and interns.
Works with the director/curator on the development of informational materials on the permanent collection and temporary installations, including gallery didactics, labels, and brochures.
Permanent Collection (40%):
Responsible for all collection management processes, including accessioning and deaccessioning, inventory control, storage safety, and maintenance of objects files.
Receives, prepares, and catalogues new acquisitions.
Manages and develops the museum’s object database (Past Perfect). Generates condition reports and conservation recommendations and arrangements.
Implements best available standards of care and protection for both permanent collection and borrowed artworks.
Updates collections management policies according to current best practices, as needed.
Manages photographic services, including collections photography, photography archives, and rights and reproductions activities.
Makes museum resources available to SFCC classes and outside classes and scholars.
Other (10%):
Oversees security procedures. Monitors storage areas and galleries for safety, environmental stability, cleanliness, and general maintenance; interfaces with physical plant technicians.
Participates in training and workshops in order to maintain and develop skills.
Contracts for services, as needed.
Assists with special events and programs, as needed; flexibility to work evening and weekend hours, as needed.
Occasional local travel may be required.
Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in art history, museum studies (with art concentration), or related field and 3 years’ museum or related experience.
Familiarity with best practices for collections care and management. Experience with museum collections databases.
Experience with exhibition installation and coordination.
General knowledge of modern and contemporary art.
Excellent written, communication, and interpersonal skills; grant-writing experience, preferred.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Proficiency with computer applications for word processing, presentation, and databases, including Windows and Past Perfect.
Frequently performs desk-based computer tasks and seated work.
Ability to lift 40 lbs. and climb a stepladder.
