POSITION PURPOSE:
This position reports to the Associate Director of Exhibition Production, ECS.
This full-time position will plan, install, and maintain the highest standards of exhibition lighting for all gallery spaces, including special exhibitions and other programmed areas throughout the museum campus including working on the programing of the Visual Interest automated system to program the lighting needs for event spaces and to trouble shoot as needed. This position will be part of a dynamic, inclusive and creative team who are committed to creating memorable museum experiences.
Primarily, this position will manage all aspects of lighting design, planning, ordering of fixtures, maintenance and tracking of inventory for all galleries and exhibition spaces. To support the Exhibitions departments cross-training initiative, and as workload and schedule allow, this position may assist with buildout and production work related to exhibitions including but not limited to; drywall and build-out, painting, cabinetry, installing graphics, demolition, matting and framing, art installation, crating and packing, and removal of recycling/waste. This is a hands-on position with the expectation that the lighting coordinator will be required to be in the galleries, on ladders and lifts, and doing the installation, focus and measuring of light levels as needed. Assist with other projects throughout the Exhibition and Collection Services (ECS) department as needed.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Plans, coordinates, installs and maintains all aspects of gallery and exhibition lighting, including burnout replacements, for all museum galleries and programmed spaces.
Manages the coordination, scheduling, and oversight of the part-time team of lighting technicians and outside lighting contractors as needed. Assists the associate director, manager and associate managers of exhibition production to ensure part-time and contractor work is completed within specification. Assists with managing and escorting contractors while they are on DAM premises and coordinates their access and necessary paperwork with Protective and Facilities Services.
Responsible for ensuring lighting equipment is appropriately stored and maintained. Secures estimates, orders, and arranges delivery or pickup, and processes invoices for gallery lighting fixtures, supplies and materials for future exhibitions. Manages the under-warranty returns and fixture/lamp replacements.
Must be able to interpret exhibition design and production drawings and to understand and recommend lighting fixture components that support the overall gallery experience. Oversees the fabrication, modification, and maintenance of integrated lighting systems for exhibition casework.
Works closely with associate director of exhibition production, manager of exhibition production, associate managers of exhibition production, project managers, staff electrician, designers, curatorial, L&E, office of the director and other museum stakeholders. Organizes, prepares, and coordinates all lighting mockups and develops various lighting layouts and specifications for all lighting fixtures.
Assists the associate director, manager, and associate managers of exhibition production in the hiring process of new part-time lighting technicians when needed. Trains and supervises part-time lighting technicians.
Assists with gallery wall installation, patching and painting, gallery maintenance and other build-out activities as needed and as workload and schedule allow.
Assists with all aspects of rotation activities in museum galleries and works closely with other areas of ECS to ensure a seamless and efficient implementation process.
Assists with other ECS departments including Conservation, Collections Management, Registrar, and Photography on various projects as needed.
Consistent usage of the Racial Equity Lens in day-to-day operations.

Pay: The hiring salary for the position is $23.08 to $26.44 per hour based on experience.
