Position Title:
Director of Collections Management
Salary Range:
$74,000 - $76,000
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a dynamic and driven individual to join the Conservation and Collections Division as the Director of Collections Management, in the Department of Collections.
The successful individual will provide management of the Collections Management department, responsible for the safety, preservation, care, and documentation of collections, as well as the installation of exhibitions and the permanent collection. Through demonstrated leadership, The Director of Collection Management will ensure the stewardship and long-term preservation of collections; including direct care, handling, packing, storage, housing, documentation, information management, and all activities related to collections of various types and sizes. This position will lead key collection moves, coordination and communication for the forthcoming expansion and new storage facility. The Director of Collections Management will also work in close partnership with the Deputy Director for Conservation and Collections and other key department directors to provide leadership, strategic direction, and management to accomplish the museum’s goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college or university in with major coursework in Conservation, Collections Management, Art History, Art Administration or Museum Studies.
Several years of senior level experience working in a museum.
Demonstrated experience with increasing responsibility in positions related to collections management, registration, or conservation.
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and experience with TMS, project management, considerable knowledge of art handling practices, application of security related practices, handling packing, and storage practices related to exhibition transportation, and preservation of art objects.
Proven experience with positively leading teams and complex projects
Preferred Qualifications:
MA in Art History, Museum studies or equivalent preferred.

Tentatively scheduled for completion in Fall 2027, the project consists of adding a new wing of nearly 170,000 square feet and renovating 45,000 square feet of existing spaces, while maintaining four acres of green space in the Sculpture Garden. Visitors will experience a seamless journey through the collections in the new wing, which will house American and Indigenous American art, African art, 21stcentury art, and a new suite of galleries for rotating special exhibitions and a special events space.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is the only art museum in the United States open 365 days a year with free general admission.
