Job DescriptionAbout the Role
The Collections Manager is a member of The Huntington’s Collections Management team, under the Registration and Collections department. This position is integral in the consistent planning and implementation of The Huntington’s schedule of gallery maintenance, permanent collection rotations, and collections care. As the collections grow and our exhibition program expands, in line with The Huntington’s strategic plan, it is necessary to have skilled staff dedicated solely to the care of the and movement of permanent collection and keep up the gallery spaces that display the artworks. The position’s primary responsibility is to assist with the movement of permanent collection artwork, whether that be for a gallery rotation, conservation assessment, or photography, and clean artworks on display and in storage.
The post holder will demonstrate a background of working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible approach.
Essential Duties


Under the supervision of the Head of Registration and Collections Management, develops, budgets for, and maintains departmental goals and objectives.

In collaboration with the Head of Preparations oversees the schedule and day-to-day management of collections technicians and on call preparator staff.

Responsible for the creation, implementation, and management of Collections Management department processes and protocols including but not limited to: storage protocols, access processes, emergency response, art incident checks, rehousing guidelines departmental and work order processes, and more.

Partners with Preservation and Facilities on environmental monitoring and the pest management program.

Partners with Preservation, Registration, Preparations, Facilities, and curators to meet milestones and goals.

Coordinates day-to-day logistics of permanent collection cleaning, art incident checks, location moves, rehousing, and storage.

Manages collections maintenance budgets and procurement, including budgeting for new equipment and archival supplies, processing vendor invoices, and keeping associated records.

Oversees and carries out collections care and maintenance in storage spaces and gallery spaces including routine collection dusting, movement, rehousing, and storage space planning.

Oversees vendors and contractors including tracking progress, quality of work, and deliverables.

In coordination with Preservation creates, implements, and manages of training programs for art handling, rehousing techniques, integrated pest management, and environmental monitoring that protect the high value assets of the museum.

Collaborates with preparators and other departments to accomplish simultaneous goals and projects to museum standards and in alignment with best practices.

Performs storeroom maintenance and upgrades including constructing shelving, installing earthquake mitigation, cleaning and organization as needed.

Special Projects as designated by Head of Registration and Collections Management.

Be certified and work within TSA guidelines for shipping artwork.

General Departmental Duties:


Act as courier for artworks being lent to institutions domestically and internationally.

Update and maintain policies and procedures regarding collection management as per current ethical standards and best practices.

Candidate Requirements and Experience
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:


Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in History, Library Science, Art, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field.

5-8 years of experience in art handling, collections care, and museum best practices required with supervisory responsibilities.

Demonstrated knowledge of art-handling procedures for two- and three-dimensional objects in a variety of materials, sizes and weights.

Excellent knowledge of archival packing techniques and materials.

Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Self-starting, resourceful, proactive, flexible, and creative problem solver with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.

Skill in organizing work, defining tasks, setting priorities, working independently, and following through on all assignments with minimal direction.

Excellent team player with an adaptive growth mindset.

Strong interpersonal skills to interact diplomatically and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within the Art Division, with staff across divisions and the institution, as well as with clients and donors outside the institution.

Ability to discreetly and tactfully recognize and handle sensitive and confidential information.

Strong computer skills, including proficiency with database management.

Skilled at maintaining and preserving appropriate and orderly filing systems.

Ability to:


Work independently and within a team

Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

Lift and/or move up to 50lbs independently

Use and maintain basic hand tools

Drive a box truck
