Position Description: The Ackland Art Museum (www.ackland.org (http://www.ackland.org)), a dynamic public universityart museum with a collection of 16,000+ works of art across all media and theworld’s cultures, and an active program of about 15 special exhibitions andchanging installations annually, seeks a Chief Preparator. The Chief Preparatoroversees and participatesin all aspects of installation of the permanent collection and exhibitions in thegalleries; the packing and crating of works of art; management of the carpentryshop; and all matters pertaining to the safe handling of works of art in thecollection and on loan to the Museum. Delegates work assignments amonginstallation staff, and assures the timely completion of all work at thehighest level of quality. Collaborates with curators in developing exhibitiondesigns, layout, schedule, signage, and other graphic treatments. Oversees andparticipates in exhibition implementation including hanging works of art ofvarying size and weight at varying heights as required (up to 20 feet high), Assistsmuseum registrar in coordinating and implementing the traveling exhibitionprogram. Designs andfabricates bases, pedestals, cases, graphics, and other supports for display ofworks of art that ensure the safety and attractive display of the objects, witheconomical and efficient use of materials. Manages artstorage areas in the museum and at off-site facility to assure safety of worksof art. Moves works of art of varying sizes and weight in and out of storageareas both in the museum and at off-site facility as needed. Oversees and participates in thedesign and construction of crates for art transport, working in-house orcontracting with outside vendors. Oversees and assists with packing andunpacking shipments of works of art, in consultation with registrar. Preparesand submits accurate estimates for the department’s annual budget and forindividual projects. Supervises two full-time preparators. Assists withimplementing building maintenance schedule and monitoring environmental needsin museum galleries and art storage. Assists with coordination and set up ofmeetings, special events, public programs.

Essential skills,knowledges, and abilities:Demonstrated proficiencyin handling works of art in a wide variety of media, including painting,sculpture, textiles, works-on-paper, ceramics, metalwork, glass, stone, and newmedia, as well as familiarity with the fabrication of exhibition/display furnitureand mounts required by such art. Experience in exhibition layout configuration,and in the design and implementation of gallery and exhibition lighting. Experiencewith graphic design for exhibitions preferred. Sensitivity to sustainablepractices in reuse of materials. Position requires strong computer skills usingprograms relevant to job responsibilities (such as Adobe Photoshop, AdobeIllustrator, and HTML). Ability andwillingness to master new technology as needed. Valid driver’s license.
Exceptional organizational skills and the ability toprioritize and manage a variety of activities with shifting deadlines. Ability to make independent decisions aboutproblems that arise within the scope of the job’s responsibilities. Strong oraland written communication skills. High level of accuracy and attention todetail a must. Proven supervisory skills. Ability to work effectively withmuseum staff, university departments, and vendors to accomplish goals of theMuseum. Familiarity with a university setting preferred.

Job Requirements: Undergraduate degree from anaccredited four-year college or university in a related field is preferred. Atleast five years’ progressively responsible experience in art handling andinstallation of permanent collections and exhibition-preparation in an artmuseum is strongly preferred. Employee must be willing and able to rearrangetheir work schedule or to work overtime including weekends if necessary toaccommodate deadlines and priorities.
Special Physical Requirements: Must have physical ability to usediverse hand and power tools (including cabinet and shop equipment of varyingsizes and complexity), hydraulic lifts, dollies, etc. Must have good dexterity,hand-eye coordination, and ability to climb and work on ladder for extendedperiods of time; to reach hands above shoulder level; to move heavy objects (upto 50 lbs.); and to stand or walk for an seven-hour day.
