Job Description and Position Summary:
The World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF) seeks an experienced Registrar for a
minimum 12-month period. Relocation assistance may be provided. The
Registrar will support the WCHOF’s exhibitions program by overseeing and
managing all aspects of the permanent collections care, safety and
documentation of the museum’s collection, which numbers over 3000 objects
in compliance with professional museum standards. The Registrar will also
develop a database of the collection using PastPerfect, as well as arrange
national and international loans and monitor environmental conditions in
galleries. Other possible duties will include assisting with loaned objects
for a traveling exhibition.
The Registrar will report to the Chief Curator and work closely with two
Assistant Curators as well as a team of Gallery Attendants.
Job Responsibilities:
· Register and assign accession numbers to allobjects in
collection according to established registration system to a previously
unaccessioned and uncataloged collection
· Assist with creating and implementing a newCollections
Management Policy system
· Compose concise and accurate descriptions ofobjects
· Maintain records of accession, condition, andlocation of objects
in collection, both permanent and loaned, and oversee movement, packing,
and shipping of objects to conform to insurance regulations and best
practices
· Oversee all new accessions through gift,purchase, and loans
· Oversee handling, packing, movement, andinspection of all
objects entering or leaving organization, including traveling exhibitions
· Review and evaluate registration and catalogsystem to maintain
applicability, consistency, and operation
· Arrange insurance for objects on loan and overseeall loan
agreements for temporary exhibitions
· Manage rights and reproductions for loanedobjects
· Maintain and update WCHOF’s Facilities Report
· Monitor art storage and exhibition spaces for
temperature/humidity, environmental hazards, safety, cleanliness, and
ongoing maintenance concerns
· Responsible for ensuring WCHOF’s compliance withAAMs best
practices and other state and federal laws regarding the collection and
incoming loans
Position Requires:
· Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree Preferred inArt History,
History, Museum Studies or similar field
· Minimum of 2-3 years experience in a museum orsimilar non-profit
center
· Excellent attention to detail
· Strong commitment to quality control, excellentcommunication,
and collaboration
· Strong computer skills: expert facility with MSOffice, including
Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
· Experience with PastPerfect preferred
· Previous experience shipping loans and/orexhibitions
domestically and internationally
· Knowledge of current best practices and standardsin the field
(including art handling, packing and shipping)
· Excellent organizational, interpersonal, andcommunication skills
(both written and verbal)
· Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and tomeet competing
deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
· Ability to be equally effective when workingindependently or as
a part of a team
· Ability to manage multiple complex projects in afast-paced work
environment
· Some travel may be required
· The final candidate must successfully pass abackground check
No chess playing skills required.
