Job Description

The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), one of the most dynamic art museums in the nation, is seeking a highly talented Exhibition Designer to join the Exhibition Design Department.
The Museum is adding approximately 75,000 square feet of new galleries, including an additional 15,000 square feet of changing exhibitions, expanded public program and education space, essential improvements to collections storage, conservation functions, and a new restaurant. The expansion will support an even more dynamic changing exhibition program and innovative new installations for PEM’s global collection. Visit www.PEM.org (http://www.pem.org/).
Reporting to the Director of Exhibition Design, the Exhibition Designer will work collaboratively with the Design Department and other departments to develop, design, and implement changing exhibitions, installation work, and gallery rotations, including design initiatives related to the PEM’s expansion project.
PEM seeks an individual with experience in the museum exhibition-design development process from concept through final design. Candidates should provide a portfolio evidencing highly creative, innovative, even theatrical design that involves the visitor emotionally and intellectually. The designer should have a track record of dynamic and refined installations, and must be versed in the integration of lighting and media technologies, immersive and/or theatrical techniques, and the ability to work on various projects simultaneously. Must have a demonstrated interest in and ability to engage in interpretive discussions and create nuanced visitor experiences. He/she must possess a strong ability to communicate and present designs effectively (visually and orally) to management and donors, curators, educators, design consultants, and preparators; and to establish respectful interaction across departments. The Designer will be expected to bring substantive, innovative design/interpretive ideas to the table early in the exhibition-planning process, as well as to welcome feedback and incorporate requested changes as exhibitions develop.
