Position Description- Casemate Museum Collections Specialist



Job title: Casemate Museum Collections Specialist

Department: Museum

FLSA status: Full time-exempt

Work Conditions: Museum environment in historic building. Moderate to heavylifting;

ability to climb ladders. 40-hour work week; requires weekend work.

Salary Range: $30,000-$35,000 based on experience

Reports to: Director of Casemate Museum

Responsibilities:

1. Assist in the transition of the Casemate Museum from US Army Museum to FMAMuseum as specified in Memoranda of Agreement with the United States Army'sTraining and Doctrine Command and Center for Military History under thedirection of the Fort Monroe Authority's (FMA) Director of the Casemate Museum.

2. Plans and organizes the collection, identification, preservation,documentation and display of items in the museum.

3. Performs conservation and artifact maintenance as per Casemate MuseumCollections Policy.

4. Plays an essential role in exhibit development as a curator of innovativeand diverse exhibits that will engage existing and new audiences.

5. Working with the Museum Director, the Collections Specialist will developand implement an acquisitions plan to proactively grow the Casemate Museum’scollections of artifacts

6. Performs scholarly research to more fully develop the history of theCasemate Museum and Fort Monroe and the artifacts associated with that history.

7. Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Casemate Museum.



Qualifications:

· Undergraduate degree in Museum Studies orrelated program; Master’s degree preferred.

· Three to five years experience working in amuseum or collections-based institution.

· Extensive experience cataloging andinventorying collections with software such as Re:discovery or PastPerfect.

· Experience developing exhibits from conceptthrough to completion.



· Demonstrated knowledge of museum principles,concepts, techniques and procedures.

· Highly motivated individual with ability tomultitask.

· Excellent organizational and planning skills.

· Ability to manage competing deadlines and workefficiently both autonomously and with a team.

· Excellent verbal and technical writing skills

· Computer skills in Microsoft Office andknowledge of other office equipment.

About the Casemate Museum

The Casemate Museum is located inside the granite walls of Fort Monroe“Freedom’s Fortress.” The Museum provides the back-story for Fort Monroe andhighlights Fort Monroe’s role in over 400 years of America’s unfolding drama;first as a colonial outpost to Civil War Union stronghold-epicenter ofContraband Refugees, home to several US Army Artillery and Training Schools andnow a National Monument. With beginnings as a row of artillery emplacements orcasemates, the museum transformed over time into officer’s quarters, holdingcells for former Confederates including Jefferson Davis, and now a museum. Themuseum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 AM-4:30 PM and closed NewYear’s, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
