Job DescriptionThe Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks a Chief Registrar to manage a team of professionals who are dedicated to the care of fine art collections; the creation and maintenance of records that capture the history and condition of the objects; and the safe and timely presentation of fine art in the museum’s galleries, around the state and around the world. In this role, the Chief Registrar will oversee all collection records and work with staff across the museum to guide, evaluate and recommend best museum practices related to the care and handling of art. He/she will also plan and prioritize projects, develop and manage departmental and project budgets; and participate in long-range goals and strategic planning for the museum. Additionally, he/she will be assigned Registrar for select on or off-site exhibitions as needed or time permits.
Job RequirementsThe successful candidate will have graduated from an accredited college or university, with major coursework in art history, studio art, art education or museum studies and significant experience as a Registrar in a museum with a similar-sized collection and active loan program. A Masters Degree and second language are desirable. Additionally he/she will have experience in managing other staff and complex budgets, good written and oral communication skills, and excellent computer skills, including collections management software systems. The selected candidate must also demonstrate the ability to develop long-range plans; the ability to plan, prioritize and manage many projects and assignments at once; and the ability to analyze, assess and make recommendations and decisions based upon a sophisticated understanding of studio art, art history, conservation techniques, and collections management and experience with insurance, transportation and international law. The selected candidate must pass a criminal background check.
Faculty rank and salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Position includes an excellent benefits package.
