Job Description:
Reporting to the Picker Art Gallery's Senior Curator of Collections, the preparator is highly skilled and responsible for all aspects of museum exhibitions and for the safe handling of works of art. The successful candidate enjoys designing, planning and producing high quality installations (temporary, collection, and/or education based exhibitions) both in our current facilities and in the envisioned Center for Art and Culture (CAC), designed by architect David Adjaye, and located in downtown Hamilton, New York.

The Picker Art Gallery is located on Colgate University's beautiful campus in Hamilton, NY. Its collection features approximately 11,000 objects across time to the present including 400 sculptures, 835 paintings, 1,400 photographs nearly 8,000 works on paper and video art.

An exciting time in Colgate's history, the newly conceived Center for Art and Culture will become home to both university museums: The Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology. These distinguished university museums play a significant role in the teaching mission and the reputation of one of the country's leading liberal arts universities with a student population of about 2,850 and a faculty of 300. The idea to create this center remerged from an extended discussion of how to maximize the resources of the university museums as potentially transformative agents for the university and the village of Hamilton. When completed, the Center will affirm the centrality of art and culture to Colgate's mission and contribute to the future vitality of the region.

Essential Functions:
- Coordinate the safe art handling of the collection and loans including hanging, matting, mounting, framing, moving, packing, crating, shipping, receiving and transporting objects.
- Properly maintain spaces (exhibition, gallery, art storage and preparatory spaces).
- Oversee all aspects of exhibition design and implementation including moving works of art in and out of storage and exhibition areas, installing and deinstalling objects properly and assisting with condition reports.
- Provide training for on-call preparators and interns; oversee outside contractors.
- Follow museum standards of conservation, security, environmental controls and safety.
- Assist in the day to day cleaning and maintenance of art.

Special Instructions to Applicants: Candidates should include resume, cover letter and list of three professional references.

Colgate, an Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Employer, is committed to developing and sustaining a diverse faculty, student body, and staff to further the university's academic mission. Women and candidates from historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
