PREPARATOR/EXHIBITION LIGHTING
Overview: Assist the Exhibition Design department in the design, execution and dismantling of art exhibit lighting for the
Museum's permanent and special exhibitions and in the production, installation, maintenance and dismantling of
special exhibitions and the permanent collection.
FLSA Status: Nonexempt Reports to: Head of Exhibition Design
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Working with Curatorial, Exhibition Designer, and Conservation ensures transformation of curatorial, design and conservation
concepts into practical aspects of exhibition lighting design.
2. Participate in exhibition planning process with appropriate personnel. Adhere to established project timelines; monitor and revise
as required.
3. Develop and monitor budgets for lighting special exhibitions and the permanent collection, as well as for special projects.
4. Purchase and maintain inventory of supplies, materials and services required to implement exhibitions. Initiate and maintain
vendor contacts and competitive bidding system. Conduct ongoing research of product lines.
5. Research materials used in creation of works of art and current condition of art to be exhibited to ensure proper conservation
standards.
6. Serves as Exhibition Department liaison to Curatorial and AV Services for the installation of time-based works of art.
7. Perform tasks necessary for preparation for installation. Participate in the installation and deinstallation of artwork utilizing
established art handling, hanging, installation and movement techniques to assure safety.
8. Assist with maintenance of Museum workshop, tools, and materials including the inventory of tools, materials, and
supplies.
9. Perform other duties as assigned. Assist others in division including mountmakers, preparators, registrars, photographers.
QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, art history, studio art, design, museum studies, or related discipline.
2. Three to five (3-5) years of experience in exhibition lighting or related professional experience.
3. Knowledge of the use of heavy equipment, lifts, electrical systems and art handling.
4. Ability to effectively communicate visual ideas.
5. Ability to take initiative and prioritize multiple competing tasks; excellent time-management and problem-solving skills.
6. Knowledge of museum standards and practices of registration, art handling, conservation.
7. Ability to work with close attention to detail and to maintain confidentiality.
8. Ability to work professionally and tactfully and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
9. Valid Washington state driver’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work areas are inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light background noise. Occasionally may be required to work outside
in various weather and climate conditions.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Sitting/Standing/Walking: Approximately 85% of time is spent standing or moving around the work areas. Balance of time
(approximately 15%) is spent seated while working at a desk.
Speaking/Hearing: Clear diction and acute hearing are necessary for effective communication with the public, vendors, and coworkers.
Cultural and /or regional accents are acceptable.
Vision: Corrected vision close to 20/20 and color vision (red, green, and blue), and good depth perception, are necessary to effectively
use the computer screens and to view works of art.
Lifting/Carrying/Pushing/Pulling: Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to fifty pounds is necessary while transporting works of art.
Climbing/Balancing: Climbing and balancing are necessary while carrying and retrieving artwork and while climbing ladders and
scaffolding.
Reaching/Handling: Good manual dexterity for handling works of art, computer keyboard use, and the ability to retrieve and work with
appropriate paperwork, equipment, and supplies.
