Paid Museum Internship beginning on or about January 1, 2014

Intern in the Division of Art (1 position), Museum of Texas Tech University. This full-time (40 hours a week) internship with benefits supports graduate level students or recent graduates of a masters program who intend to pursue careers in collection management or a curatorial position in a museum with an emphasis on art. The position will provide experience in implementing a program of preventive conservation, preservation, and documentation of the Museum’s Diamond M Collection. The collection consists of approximately 350 works of art, including paintings, works on paper, and sculptures. The term of the internship is for twelve months beginning on or about January 1, 2014.

Duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to: inspecting works of art, updating condition reports, rehousing works of art, working with professional conservators to develop treatment proposals and undertake treatments,
updating database, updating collection records, and writing progress reports.


Qualifications.
 Familiarity with preventive conservation of art works;
effective communication skills, including interpersonal and written; some graduate education in museum studies or related field; ability to work independently and manage time effectively; possess high standards for the care and preservation of works of art; willingness to work with physical objects.



Physical Requirements. This internship requires a moderate level of physical activity. The intern must be physically able to
sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time; lift and carry a minimum of 35 pounds; bend, stoop, reach, kneel, climb movable staircases and/or ladders; use hand tools including but not limited to hammers, pliers, drills, screwdrivers;
effectively use a laptop and/or desktop computer, as well as telephone, fax, and email; be able to perform competent visual inspections of works of art.
