Reporting to the Head of Paper Conservation at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Senior Mountmaker is responsible for the design and fabrication of mounts for the Photographs, Drawings, and Manuscripts collections in preparation for exhibition and storage, and in accordance with the highest Museum preservation standards. Working closely with the Department’s conservators, responsibilities include: design and fabrication of display and storage mounts for a variety of paper object types; coordination with senior staff and other departments on program planning, budgets, and schedules; writing, monitoring, and quarterly reporting of the Mountmaking budget; supervision and guidance of two intermediate-level Mountmakers; research, inventory, and ordering of supplies and display materials; and identification of collection exhibition and storage needs. The position requires some travel, including courier trips, conferences, and opportunities for professional development.

Job Requirements
In concert with department conservators, the Senior Mountmaker:


Establishes and implements standards for the display, housing, and handling of collections
Undertakes special projects and assignments assigned by the senior staff
Researches and disseminates new mounting concepts, designs, and practices to the field
Ensures conservation studios and collection storerooms are appropriately maintained
Ensures mount making records are maintained and accurate

The successful candidate will have proven experience in the hinging, matting, and framing of artworks on paper. Must have good written and verbal communication skills; must be highly organized and efficient in independently managing projects, paperwork, staff, and deadlines.
Qualifications:


BA or BS in fine arts, studio arts, conservation, design, engineering or industrial arts. Engineering background highly desirable
7-10 years experience in design and fabrication of mounts and handling of art objects, 5 years of which must be in a museum
