Job Summary

The Director of Collection Management serves as the leader of the Collections Department. The position directs staff and activities that are responsible for acquisitions, loans, collections care, and exhibition registration, as well as day-to-day management and care of the collections maintained by the DMA. The position is integral to ensuring continuity of collections care and maintaining the highest standards in the stewardship of the Museum’s collections. The Director of Collection Management works collaboratively and effectively to promote the mission and goals of the Museum.

Essential Functions:



Provides leadership and direction for the collections department including setting long-range plans, goals, policies, and budgets for all aspects of the care of works of art in the collection or on loan to the DMA.
Works in partnership with the Exhibitions Department as an overall division, as well as with curators, conservators, and other departments of the Museum to assure the successful implementation of the Museum’s goals and projects.



Provides planning and budgeting support for institutional projects in collaboration with Curatorial, Exhibitions, and other Departments to assure communication and support completion of projects within defined budgets.



Coordinates and monitors proper level of fine arts insurance coverage.



Responsible for the enforcement of regulations by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in coordination with the Security Department.
Oversees the management of the Collections Committee of trustees in coordination with the Associate Director of Collections and Exhibitions and the Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs.
Supervises the recommendations and process for Acquisitions, Deaccessions, and Loans, working with Registrars, Curators, Associate Director of Collections and Exhibitions and Director.
Oversees applications for U. S. Indemnity, Immunity from Judicial Seizure, and CITES permits.
Supervises administration of The Museum System (TMS) and the Museum’s collection files. Works with the curators and registrars to ensure the database and files are up to date.
Manages Special Services for Museum trustees and donors.
Coordinates with the Development Department on grants or fundraising endeavors.
Maintains active involvement in professional organizations and activities relevant to institutional priorities.
Completes, directs, or assigns special projects as required.
Adheres to Museum policies and supports management decisions in a positive, professional manner.



Conforms to the AAMD code of ethics governing the art museum profession.


Supervisory and Management Essential Functions:



Supervises and manages performance of personnel in two departments (Registrars and Preparators), providing direction, leadership, and setting goals with each direct report for long-range plans, policies, and budgets as appropriate. Establishes a work environment that allows for open communication, professional growth, and retention of committed professional staff.
Prioritizes day to day activities of the Registrars and Preparators with direction from the Associate Director of Collections and Exhibitions.



Develops, approves expenses, and monitors and maintains the Collection Management Department and individual exhibition budgets with the Associate Director of Collections and Exhibitions.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


M.A. in Art History or related field preferred.
A minimum of ten years progressive supervisory experience of professional and support staff; experience with Art Museum Collection Management required.



Thorough knowledge of registration methods and conservation terminology.



Ability to provide effective direction to administrative, professional, and support staff, inspiring them to productive action.
Ability to plan, develop, monitor, and manage significant, detailed budgets and to analyze and compile budget reports, summaries, and charts.
Analytical skills to read and interpret professional journals and governmental regulations.
Ability to write business correspondence, reports, and procedure manuals and respond to questions and present information effectively to the staff and museum professionals.
Creative and flexible problems-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented and fast-paced work environment.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and tactfully with a broad spectrum of the Museum community: colleagues, trustees, vendors, donors, and lenders.
Knowledge of art law issues regarding legal importation and acquisition of works of art, in compliance with other DMA policies and AAMD.
