Director of Collections (Special Projects Officer IV)


Characteristics of Work:
Accessioning, de-accessioning and maintaining permanent collections electronic database and files. Uphold and implement collections policies and procedures. Manage all aspects of the museum collection including acquisitions, cataloging artifacts into the collection and recommending what artifacts to accept based on the collections plan.

Support a collaborative work environment within project teams and with all Museum colleagues. Collaborate with team members, project managers, other museums and members of the community to develop and produce exhibits and quality experiences according to the Museums mission and vision.

Examples of Work:
1. Scheduling and overseeing restorations and conservation of artifacts
2. Handling artifacts including moving, installing and reorganization of collections storage
3. Curate temporary exhibitions: research, label writing, exhibition design, layout, tours, promoting exhibit
4. Giving tours of the collection
5. Handling all aspects of incoming and outgoing loans including shipping, insurance, documentation, etc.
6. Answer inquiries regarding collections and history of agriculture in Mississippi
7. Keeping accurate inventory of collections and developing and implementing inventory projects
8. Stay abreast of developments in agricultural and living history museum.
9. Contribute to development of successful grant proposals, newsletters, social media campaigns and other projects by researching and writing as assigned.
10. Research, develop, and manage portions of exhibit budgets pertaining to collections management and exhibition development
11. Work in collaboration with other staff in development and implementation of special events to develop and maintain a high quality and enjoyable educational experience
12. Training and managing volunteers in the areas related to collections and exhibitions.
13. Other duties as assigned by director, deputy director or commissioner

Minimum Qualifications:

* Master's Degree in Museum Studies, History, Museum Education, Public History or related field preferred
* Four years' experience in a Museum with knowledge of Collections Management
* Proficient in Collections Management practices and procedures including artifact handling, inventory, collections database (Past Perfect preferred) administration, incoming and outgoing loans, shipping, packing, insurance, found in collection artifacts, handling artifacts under the Abandonded Cultural Property Act and storage of a variety of artifacts.
* Experience curating exhibits including research, writing artifact labels and text panels, creating interpretive components and identifying appropriate artifacts for exhibition.
* Experience installing and uninstalling exhibits
* Ability to work independently
* Ability to work with a diverse community and communicate effectively both in writing and verbally
* Knowledge and/or interest in Mississippi Agriculture
