*1 Full Time Term Position (35 hours/week; one-year term from start date)*

The Field Museum seeks an experienced collections assistant to move and
inventory life-size bronze figures by Malvina Hoffman (full figures,
torsos, and heads) held in storage and on display as part of a project to
examine, document, and conserve them. The position is full-time and for a
one-year term under the supervision of Anthropology Collections Management.
The project will require consultation with the Chief Conservator, Project
Conservator, Head Curator, Hoffman collection Curator, and Head of
Exhibits. Preferred start date is April 2014, but there is room for
flexibility.

The Hoffman collection includes 95 figures made between 1930 to 1933 by
sculptor Malvina Hoffman, commissioned by the Museum to create works
representing world-wide cultures for a dedicated gallery. This position
along with Exhibits Production staff will be primarily responsible for
moving figures between display, storage, and the conservation laboratory in
collaboration with the project conservator.


Responsibilities:

- Prepares storage for Malvina Hoffman bronze sculptures. Upgrades and
maintains storage conditions for the Anthropology collections utilizing
preventive conservation methods.
- Organizes, inventories, moves, and stores the Anthropology collections
as appropriate. Consults with Collections Management and Conservation staff
regarding safe handling and appropriate storage practices.
- With assistance of Anthropology Collections Area and Exhibits staff,
moves objects to and from Exhibit, storage, and laboratory.
- Monitors movement of objects at all stages and is responsible for
keeping the collections inventory database up-to-date. Consults with
Collections Management, the Head Registrar, and Hoffman collection Curator
regarding the database and the accuracy of its information.
- Assists Project Conservator with maintaining laboratory and
photography workspace and equipment in consultation with Collections
Management.
- Supervises volunteers, interns, and visitors using the Anthropology
collections, as required.
- Performs other collections-related activities as assigned.


Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree is required in Anthropology, Art History, and/or
Museum Studies with experience in artifact handling.
- Demonstrated superb manual and organizational skills, impeccable
attention to detail, ability to focus on tasks, and willingness to follow
directions and procedures.
- An in-depth knowledge of accepted museum collections care practices
and procedures expected.
- Demonstrated ability to work alone as well as in a team environment.
- Demonstrated computer proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel as
well as museum collections database; preference given to candidates with
working knowledge of KE EMu as well as working with large objects such as
sculptures.
- Position requires high frequency of strenuous activity lifting heavy
objects, moving carts, using equipment to construct artifact storage trays,
etc.
