Director of Exhibition will be responsible for Fort Ticonderoga’s comprehensive exhibition program including the development, fabrication, and installation of permanent, temporary, and virtual exhibitions, as well as exterior installations such as site interpretive and way-finding signage.

Additional duties related to the museum’s exhibition program include hiring and administering temporary gallery staff, planning, implementing and evaluating exhibition-related gallery programs, developing and implementing school programs in partnership with the Director of Education, and directly participating in short and long-term institutional strategic planning.

The Director of Exhibition will also assist in Fort Ticonderoga’s collections, education, interpretation, horticulture, guest service, retail, marketing and development programs as needed.

In collaboration with the President and CEO, the Director of Exhibition will develop and manage annual exhibition operating and capital budgets and a multi-year schedule of exhibition.

Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:
Applicant must be enthusiastic, energetic, and have a passion for educating the public through dynamic exhibitions and related educational programs. Candidate must possess an extensive knowledge of modern museum exhibition theory and practice including the use of technology in exhibition presentations. The Director of Exhibition should have graphic design skills and a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop or similar graphics software.

The Director of Exhibition must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. The candidate will be expected to conduct in-depth research, and have the ability to develop research into exhibition text, public education programs, and publications. Exceptional writing, editorial, and presentation skills are essential to present information in a concise and insightful manner to people of all ages and levels of education.

Applicant will work closely with the museum’s Curator of Collections in the handling of all manner of museum collections including weapons of all types, art, textiles, paper, and archeological specimens. Candidate should possess an in-depth knowledge of American military and social history and related material culture, particularly as associated with the 18th century.

The Director of Exhibition will be a key member of the museum’s leadership team. Administratively, the Director of Exhibition will be expected to develop and accurately manage budgets, manage exhibition gallery staff, and interpret and uphold policies, rules, and procedures. Candidate must possess the ability to manage several tasks simultaneously, analyze and solve problems, and exercise tact and judgment in all situations. Initiative is required and the candidate must be able to work independently yet be an effective team member. Applicant must have a proven track record of managing exhibition projects in a timely and efficient manner.
