Preparator for Digitization of the Collection

JOB SUMMARY:
The Preparator for Digitization of the Collection is primarily responsible for art handling duties in support of the digitization of the DMA’s permanent collection and long-term loans. In addition, the Preparator for Digitization of the Collection works as a part of the larger team of preparators in installations, preparation, and packing of the permanent collection, exhibitions, and loans.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Coordinate with the Assistant Registrar for Digitization of the Collection, the Museum’s Photography staff, and other staff regarding the movement of works of art from the galleries or art storage to the photography studio or other suitable location for documentation and photography.
• Handle works of art in various situations according to DMA guidelines and standard museum practices. Prepare, measure, and move works of art safely within storage areas and throughout the building.
• Documents location changes in the required database after each art move.
• Assist Photography staff with basic digital file management and upload tasks associated with digitization workflows.
• Maintains strict confidentiality of all DMA projects, shipments, and art movement schedules.
As directed by the Head Preparator:
• Install and deinstall works of art, including packing and unpacking works of art, by following provided instructions with consideration given for the safety of the objects and in coordination with the Registrar assigned to each project.
• Receive/release works of art by loading/unloading from vans/trucks, and securing each shipment in coordination with Registrar assigned to each project.
• Maintain art storage areas and all art preparation areas and keeps all tools and supplies secure and appropriately stocked.
• Prepare works of art for loan, installation, or storage as scheduled by registrars or conservator(s) to include such activities as securing existing frame, adding felt linings or spacers, glazing, attaching backing boards, constructing special mounts, or retrofitting crates.
• Assist with local pickups or deliveries using DMA art van.
• Other projects/duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Education equivalent to Bachelor’s degree in Art History or Fine Arts with two and one half years of experience of professional art handling or a combination of acceptable training and experience.
• Knowledge of museum standards and practices of art handling and collections storage requirements and procedures.
• Ability and skill to safely work on ladders, with a forklift, and occasionally on a high lift or scaffolding.
• Ability to use a wide variety of tools and equipment in order to handle oversized and/or heavy art objects and exhibition material safely.
• Ability to cooperate and follow instructions while working with a team.
• Knowledge of computerized collections management systems, TMS experience preferred.
• Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications and exceptional comfort with digital tools and software, including Knowledge and exposure to digital imaging and photography.
• Good speaking/understanding of English, art history terms, art techniques.
• Ability to deal effectively with the staff, public, vendors, artists and scholars.
• Ability to visually inspect artwork, sit or stand for long periods of time, and ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
