International Mount making Forum 5

The 5th International Mount making Forum was held at the Cleveland Museum of Art on May 4-5th. Over 160 mount makers, conservators and preparators from around the world gathered to share their knowledge and methods for mount making art and artifacts.

DAY 1
There were eleven presentations on the first day that ranged from material testing at the Cleveland Museum of Art; unique mounting techniques for jewelry from Africa and Oman at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art; to several presentations on the challenges of mitigating seismic forces with mounts and statue-pedestal systems. Jamie Hascall (PACCIN event organizer and website contributor), Mount Maker/Craftsman, Mountmaking Focus Studio/Hascall Consulting, Seattle, WA, provided a talk on mountmaking materials selection for object safety and practicality.

DAY 2
The second day of the forum provided poster presentations, workshops and tours of the facilities at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the center of innovation and entrepreneurship at the Sears Think[box] located at Case Western Reserve University. Jim Williams (PACCIN Membership Committee Vice Chair), Exhibition Designer/Preparator, Kent State University, Kent, OH, provided a workshop on making simple costume mounts using Fosshape, a resin-impregnated polyester felt that hardens using heat or steam.

During the forum PACCIN provided an after hours social event on May 4th at the Happy Dog/Euclid Tavern. Over 50 people attended from the forum as well as museum and commercial people from the Cleveland area.
