PACIN presents this article in support of the Mountmakers Forum. In doing so we seek to promote the appreciation of this important discipline within the field of preventive conservation. Mountmaking plays an important role in the safe handling, display, transport and storage of the artifacts that we care for. Please plan on attending the next Mountmakers Forum slated for 2012 (details will be provided as they become available) and in the mean time please take part in the discussions found here in the Mountmaking section of the PACIN Forum as well as in the Mountmakers Forum web-group. A link to view streaming footage of the Forum can be found at the end of the article.

In another first for our group, PACIN took our booth down the road to Los Angeles where AIC (The American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works) held its 37th Annual Meeting on May 19–22.

Our presence there was made possible to a large degree due to the generosity of AIC and specifically of Amanda Knowles Meetings Coordinator – AIC, and Ruth Seyler - Membership and Meetings Director - AIC.

Held on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles, CA.

This is a summary of the one-day Art Handling Workshop that PACIN co-sponsored on Friday November 14th at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.

The workshop was co-sponsored and organized by RC-WR (Registrar’s Committee Western Region), CAM (Californian Association of Museums), CERA (California Exhibition Resources Alliance) and PACIN. Sharing the organization of the Workshop made for an efficient, cost effective and well promoted event. In total 131 delegates attended. In initial planning we were expecting 50-75 delegates.

Michael Van Hook scanning barcodes on packed boxes

Completed in June of 2004 and spanning a 5 year period, over 800,000 objects were documented, packed and relocated at the National Museum of American Indian. This collection is now one of the most thoroughly documented collections of its type and size due to the digital imaging component integrated into the move process. It is also one of the more accessible collections due to the addition of a barcoding system that was also integrated into the move project.
