Job opening, Preparator, Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY

Preparator. The Everson Museum of Art is seeking a highly motivated, experienced individual to head all preparation and installation of permanent collection and special exhibitions. The Preparator is an integral member of the Curatorial Department; reports to Senior Curator.
Full- time position with excellent benefits including health, dental and 401K.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
§ Prepare objects for display and storage, including designing and fabricating object mounts as well as matting and framing 2-dimensional works as necessary
§ Work closely with Senior Curator and Registrar on all aspects of exhibition development, planning and installation
§ Lighting exhibitions
§ Work with Senior Curator and Registrar to problem-solve exhibition display possibilities, mounts, object security, packing and storage
§ Manage the ongoing monitoring of the condition and appearance of exhibition installations and permanent collection galleries
§ Work with, train and evaluate departmental interns
§ Work with the Registrar to implement safe art handling procedures to ensure safety of art work and successful installations
§ Assist the Registrar in general maintenance of the collection and art storage facilities, including inventories
§ Produce exhibition labels
§ Manage and oversee photography of the collection
§ Assist with minor conservation to the collection as necessary
§ Keep up to date on new technologies, tools and archival materials

QUALIFICATIONS:
§ Minimum of 2-3 years art handling experience, preferably in a museum setting
§ Bachelor’s degree in fine art, art history, museum studies, or related field
§ Broad knowledge of modern and contemporary American art
§ Working knowledge of museum best practices for art handling 2 and 3-Dimensional objects in a variety of materials and sizes
§ General knowledge of museum lighting techniques.
§ General knowledge of current conservation practices and archival materials
§ General knowledge of carpentry, and shop equipment as well as fine art rigging
§ General computer skills are a must and familiarity with FileMaker Pro and PhotoShop is desired
§ Experience working with new media is a plus.
§ Must be able to lift 70 lbs, work on a ladder and operate power equipment
§ The successful candidate will be self-motivated and have strong time management and organizational skills
