ART MUSEUM PREPARATOR (Position Classification Title: Curatorial Technician)

The Weatherspoon Art Museum seeks a full-time Preparator who is an experienced, team-oriented professional who will thrive in a dynamic university art museum with an active exhibition schedule and collection of 5,900 objects.
Primary responsibilities include installing, matting, framing, lighting, moving, packing and shipping preparation, storing and otherwise caring for works of art on loan to the Museum and in its collection. The Preparator works closely with one other full-time Preparator, as well as with staff registrars and curators, artists, and guest curators and registrars. Ability to collaborate with others is essential, as is effective communication with a wide variety of people to articulate needs, problems, and solutions. In addition to daily interaction with other Museum staff, s/he communicates about installation requirements, material needs, and processes with artists and their galleries and consults with University Facilities Operations, outside contractors, and vendors regarding technical issues. Assists in supervising and training graduate assistants, interns, and temporary workers on handling, packing, and installing works of art.
Candidate must be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment, exercising great care in handling objects while adhering to schedule. Rigorous attention to detail and accuracy, and strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills are needed. This position reports to the Registrar.
Preferred qualifications: Minimum B.A. in art-related field and 3-5 years of art handling, fabrication, installation, and preparatory experience with established art institutions. Knowledge of current museum professional standards and best practices, including occupational hazards and safety precautions. Strong technical skills in basic construction, fabrication, matting, framing, and installation methods; also proper use and care of power and manual tools, lifts, and other pertinent equipment. Knowledge of and experience with modern and contemporary art materials and processes, video and audio equipment, computers, lighting methods, basic museum conservation standards, and extensive handling methods. Heavy lifting, climbing, strenuous physical activity, and standing for prolonged periods of time are required of this position.
