Job Description
The National Museum of Health and Medicine inspires interest and promotes understanding of medicine with a special emphasis on American military medicine, A MUSEUM SPECIALIST who will participate in the collection of important and unique resources in support of innovative exhibits, educational programs, and research is sought for this National Historic Landmark. The museum specialist may prepare historical artifacts for storage and use; apply appropriate preventative conservation techniques; handle artifacts; compile, organize and preserve records; catalog Historical Collection objects onto a computerized database; perform technical research services; develop policy guidelines; and participate in museum exhibits. Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history or related field plus 1-2 years of relevant museum or collections management experience sought. Master’s degree or medical experience preferred. Museum SpecialistPosition Description
A. OVERVIEW: The Collections staff of the NMHM preserves materials representing key subject areas in the history and practice of American medicine, military medicine, and modern medical and health issues and research; and any other area of the museum’s mission. Overall, the responsibilities of the staff are to (1) provide the highest level of professional care to the NMHM collections and their associated documentation; (2) collect objects, specimens, and related archival materials deemed significant and relevant to the mission of the NMHM and according to NMHM policies and procedures for review; (3) support research, exhibits, and public programs through access to collections per NMHM policy and procedure; (4) coordination with the Registrar on all associated needs; and (5) represent and support NMHM interests in venues where collections are key to advancing the mission.
B. MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Activities include the following but are not limited to:
- · Prepare historical artifacts for storage and for use by researchers or exhibitions.
- · Application of appropriate preventative conservation and handling techniques to extend the useful life of the collections.
- · Handle artifacts for use by non-museum staff and supervise handling of artifacts by non-collections staff.
- · Compile, organize and preserve records and supporting documentation for all items in Historical Collections.
- · Catalog Historical Collection objects onto a computerized database.
- · Perform and provide technical research services and answer official, professional and public inquiries by telephone, electronic, written correspondence or in person about specialized areas represented by the collections.
- · Conduct and convey research on collections care and management.
- · Develop guidelines for policy implementation.
- · Make contributions to exhibits by participation on planning, working with exhibits and production staff, and advising on handling and displaying artifacts.

D. QUALIFICATIONS:
- · Possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, or related field. Master’s degree or medical experience preferred.
- · 1-2 years relevant museum or collections management experience, professional knowledge of standard museum practices, packing and transportation of museum artifacts and fine arts, care, handling, and storage of museum objects, and relative environmental and security requirements.
- · Excellent oral and written communications skills, demonstrated knowledge and use of KE EMu software (or other collections database) and strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications.
- · Requires ability to work in confined collections storage areas, ability to climb ladders and use basic materials handling equipment such as dollies, pallet jacks, flatbed carts, hand drills, etc.
- · Ability to lift supplies or museum objects weighing 30-40 pounds.
E. This MoGer International position is supported by a Federal Government contract; thus employment is subject to the availability of funding. The current option period under the contract ends July 31, 2014; therefore, continued employment beyond that date is subject to available funding and the option to continue support services under the contract.
