    Assistant Preparator
    Reports To: Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Craft

    SUMMARY
    Working in close collaboration with the Exhibition Designer, Head Preparator, Curators, and related Exhibitions staff, the Assistant Preparator assists with the handling, packing, matting, framing, installing and de-installing of all traveling and permanent collection exhibitions, according to museum best-practices. The Assistant Preparator also is principally responsible for the lighting of traveling and permanent collection exhibitions. In close collaboration with the Registrar for Collections and the Head Preparator, the Assistant Preparator assists with the handling, packing, displaying and storing of permanent collection artworks according to museum best practices, including the design and production of long-term display and storage solutions for the museum’s permanent collection; performs general maintenance to permanent collection objects while on display; ensures safe working environment and cleanliness of preparatory room, loading docks, and areas in which artwork is processed, moved or stored; performs other duties, as requested.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    · Working in close collaboration with the Exhibition Designer, Head Preparator, Curators, and related Exhibitions staff, the Assistant Preparator assists with the handling, packing, matting, framing and installing of permanent collection and traveling exhibition artworks according to museum best-practices; assists with design and production of exhibition casework, internal furniture and specialized mounts; assists Exhibition Designer and Head Preparator in coordinating all aspects of gallery preparation, including scheduling and supervising painters, janitors, and other contractors; informs Facilities Manager, Security Supervisor, and Visitor Services personnel about contractors’ schedules and patrons’ access to galleries, as necessary.
    · Lights artwork in traveling and permanent collection exhibitions; knowledge of lighting systems and their controls, lighting standards for the display of artwork in museums, and the use of light meters and other specialized equipment is highly desirable.
    · In close collaboration with the Head Preparator, Curators and the Registrar for Collections, the Assistant Preparator handles, moves, packs, displays, and stores permanent collection artworks according to museum best practices; assists with the design and manufacture of long-term display and storage solutions for the museum’s permanent collection
    · Works closely with the Exhibition Designer and other preparators in determining stability of permanent collection artwork for display in exhibition galleries, State Services traveling exhibitions and the Artmobile; mats and frames artwork, as necessary; coordinates and participates in the installation and de-installation of permanent collection artworks in the Artmobile.
    · Assists Exhibition Designer and Head Preparator with the design and production of exhibition casework, and/or specialized mounts for traveling and permanent collection exhibitions, State Services traveling exhibitions and the Artmobile, in consultation with Curators, the Registrar for Collections, and the Senior Education Specialist (State Services); assists Exhibition Designer, Senior Education Specialist and Facilities Manager to ensure Artmobile maintains an appropriate environment for the display of permanent collection artwork; makes recommendations for upgrades to the Artmobile, as necessary.
    · Assists Head Preparator with the design and fabrication of special crates, modules, brackets, and traveling frames to meet insurance and museum shipping specifications; selects protective or preservative materials to protect artwork against vibration, moisture, impact, or other hazards during transit; Shapes and contours internal support modules, based on size and type of paintings, sculptures, bronzes, glass, and other art objects.
    · Assists in directing workers engaged in moving art objects from receiving or storage areas to galleries of museum, in packing shipments, or in rigging sculptures for installation of exhibition.
    · Assists Head Preparator and Registrar for Collections with general maintenance to permanent collection objects while on display in museum galleries; informs Facilities Manager, Security Supervisor, and Visitor Services personnel about gallery closure due to these activities.
    · Assists Head Preparator with maintaining inventory and safe storage of exhibition cases, tops, platforms, risers, and other exhibition furniture; assists with the design and production of new exhibition furniture, as needed.
    · Assists in maintaining records and documents of incoming and outgoing shipments, permanent collections artwork, or location of traveling exhibitions and loan materials.
    · Prepares and attaches written or pictorial instructions for unpacking, storing or exhibiting artwork, as necessary; informs Facilities Manager, Security Supervisor, and Visitor Services personnel of any specialized artwork instructions (i.e. turning on/off electronics, neon, etc.), as necessary.
    · Assists Chief Curator with the development of annual departmental budget, including providing cost estimates for exhibition design and installation, exhibition casework and internal furniture; collection storage supplies, general preparatory room supplies, matting and framing needs, and permanent collection conservation.
    · In collaboration with Head Preparator and Facilities Manager, coordinates use and maintains cleanliness of Sprinter van and makes recommendations for upgrades to same; transports artwork for exhibitions, loans, and potential acquisitions, using transportation provided by the museum, as needed; may occasionally serve as courier for artworks in traveling exhibitions and/or the permanent collection.
    · Maintains safe working environment and cleanliness of preparatory room, loading docks, and areas in which artwork is processed, moved or stored.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
    Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; proficiency with use of computers and software, especially Microsoft Office program suite, Google SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; knowledge of museum collections management databases, preferably EmbARK. Education and/or experience in lighting design preferred.
