    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    Position Title: Assistant Preparator
    Position Type: Full Time
    FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
    Division: Art & Education
    Department: Collections Management
    Reports to: Preparator

    Position Summary
    Reporting to the Preparator, the Assistant Preparator provides manual labor support and assistance in the packing and unpacking, loading and unloading, transportation, installation, deinstallation and related type tasks of all artwork for featured and permanent exhibitions both inside the museum and on the museum grounds. This position will assist with maintenance of exhibition spaces, shop areas and storage areas. The Assistant Preparator will be required to dust, clean glass, change gallery lights and assist in pest monitoring. The Assistant Preparator works in conjunction with all other members of the Preparation department.


    Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
    • Assists with all loading and unloading of art trucks in a timely and efficient manner
    • Assists in unpacking and packing of artwork and exhibition furniture
    • Assists registrars with condition reporting of all incoming and outgoing artwork, objects, and artifacts
    • Assists with the arranging of objects in storage spaces to await exhibition
    • Assists in the preparation of housing for artwork, objects, and artifacts for storage and transportation purposes
    • Assists in the safe moving and handling of art objects of all mediums throughout the museum facility
    • Assists with all aspects of installation and collection rotations in permanent gallery spaces, temporary gallery spaces, and outdoor sculpture trails
    • Assists with installation of exhibition signage and wall didactics
    • Assists with gallery lighting
    • Assists with matting and framing of artwork
    • Maintains the care and cleanliness of all casework, platforms, and gallery walls throughout the museum facility on a regular basis
    • Assists in maintaining an inventory list of tools and materials for the Museum Prep shop
    • Assists in maintaining organized, clean, and functional work space, storage space, and paths of transit for art, crates, furniture and equipment
    • Assists in staging collection objects and loans for photography
    • Assists in the fabrication of shelves, risers, platforms, and other basic
    designs for exhibition furniture
    • Assists with pest management
    • Completes all additional assigned tasks and requests for the general
    support of the Preparation Department and Museum functions

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education, Training, and Traits:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • Basic working knowledge of hand tools, power tools and math applications
    • Knowledge and interest in art and art history

    Work Experience:

    • Minimum 1-2 years of museum or gallery experience preferred
    In regard to education and experience, an equivalent combination of relevant training
    and/or work experience will satisfy the minimum requirements.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    • Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record

    • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively on a team
    • Highly motivated and goal oriented
    • Preference for familiarity with a range of audio/visual equipment

    Physical Demands and Work Environment:

    The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are
    representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the
    essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to

    • Physical demands: In the work environment described below, position requires
    verbal and written conversation with others, sitting, standing, walking, bending,
    climbing ladders, reaching, strenuous lifting/moving objects up to 50 pounds,
    and use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Position
    requires use of hands to safely handle and move collection objects according to
    the most current approved museum standards. Position periodically requires
    standing for prolonged periods of time. Vision abilities required by the job include
    close vision.
    • Work Environment: The majority of work will be performed in the Museum Prep
    shop, art storage vaults, and gallery spaces. The noise level in the work
    environment is usually low to moderate. Work requires periodic transport of
    packed art works and exhibition furniture and equipment to and from local offsite
    storage facilities. Incumbent must meet a flexible work schedule including
    occasional evenings and weekends.
