Post 2022 Preparators Conference discussion thread

    8/17/21

Post your questions about the upcoming 2022 Preparators Conference in this forum thread. Visit here for the website page where updates will be posted.

We are happy to announce that our next Preparators Conference will be held on May 12th and 13th of 2022 at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (CBMAA) in Bentonville, AR.

We are excited to partner with CBMAA to bring Prep Con to a new region in the United States. Featuring a diverse collection of American art, and a commitment to exhibitions bringing women and BIPOC artists to the fore, the CBMAA is situated on 120 acres of lush Arkansas greenery traversed by a network of nature trails and art walks. The conference will be held within the sweeping glass expanse of CBMAA’s Great Hall, designed by architect Moshe Safdie.

Conference Theme: Adaptation—it’s how living creatures have continued to survive, grow and thrive for eons of our shared history on Earth. Adaptation is a requirement in the face of a changing world, changing conditions, changing weather, changing knowledge. It’s through adaptation that we grow, and our corner of that world, art preparation and collections care, has had to adapt over and over to grow since our disciplines emerged as distinct within the realm of cultural preservation and exhibition.

Request for presentation proposals will be posted soon with further details.

Conference Registration begins in January 2022

We are now accepting submission of speaker proposals for our 2022 conference at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. We will consider proposals on any topic related to art preparation, art handling and collections care, but will give special consideration for those proposals that address the theme of adaptation.

The year 2020 was a year of intense and unrelenting adaptation—we had to relearn entire systems that were nearly perfected; learn to wear ever-present face masks and face shields; learn to do physical work while somehow physically distanced; learn to be virtual; learn to look at our work in a whole new light of cultural reckoning over race and privilege and evaluate where we stand, where our institutions and workplaces stand in that discussion—learn to change our minds and our hearts.

How have you adapted? ...to Covid-19? ...to calls for social change we cannot ignore? ...to the changing Climate and need for sustainability? ...to changing conditions in the workplace or during an install?

We are interested in sessions that focus on the following:

Adapting to changes in your workplace, workflow, policies, practices, and/or planning.
Crating & Packing: 2020 was the 30-year Anniversary of the seminal publication “Art in Transit”. How are the lessons learned then adapted for today?
    Collections Care
    Collaboration
    Decolonization
    Discussions of DEAI
Exhibition installs, installation hardware and methods, exhibition lighting, casework
    Mount-making
    Pandemic Response
    Rigging
    Shipping/logistics
    Sustainability

    Presentation Opportunities

The conference will have three ways to participate:
30-minutepresentations (20 minutes of presenting, 10 minutes of Q+A), ideal for a single speaker covering a focused topic or case study.
60-minutepanel presentations/discussions (45 minutes presentation, 15 minutes Q+A). This format is ideal for several speakers/panelists focusing on a broad topic of interest to the entire PACCIN community.
5-minuteQuick Presentations (5 minutes of presenting, no Q+A, ideal for a single speaker presenting a Prep Story, Quick Tip, or other short topic presentation). Check out the Prep Stories from our 2019 Prep Con in Amsterdam for examples.

How toSubmit your proposals for Prep Con 2022:

Details on how to provide your proposal is located on the 2022 Prep Con page.

Just want to give everyone an update regarding the 2022 Prep Con. Registration is NOW OPEN!!! go to the conference page for details and the link.

We are still accepting speaker submissions until January 31st. So if you have an idea for a presentation send it in. Go to the Prep Con page for details on this years theme. Also, I would like to see more Quick-tips and Prep-Stories from the PACCIN community! Check out the ones from 2019 and see how others have handled it. Are there other great ideas like the TC-1000 out there? Once we get all the submissions reviewed and through the selection process we should be able to provide a conference schedule later in February.

We are also rolling out the Event Scholarship program soon so any PACCIN members who need assistance in attending the conference can apply.
