    Job Description – Lead Preparator/Exhibitions Manager

    Summary: The Everson Museum of Art seeks a highly skilled Art Preparator/Exhibitions Manager to join the Collection/Exhibition department. The successful candidate will be trained in museum/art handling best practices, be a creative problem-solver, be detail oriented, and have the ability to make the most from limited resources. Reporting to the Registrar, the Lead Preparator works closely with the Museum’s Collection and Facilities staff. The Preparator is an important team member, responsible for the well-being and care of the Museum’s collection and exhibitions.

    The Lead Preparator is responsible for assessing the staffing required to accomplish any given project or installation and hire and train freelance art handlers or temporary staff for collections projects.
    As Exhibitions Manager, the hired candidate will develop the installation schedule for all exhibitions at the museum. This will entail close communication with the Curatorial Department, putting together cost estimates for installations, special installation designs, additional freelance/contracted staff, crates and packing of the collection. An ability to meet deadlines and communicate clearly the needs and resources required to do so is a must.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Prepare objects for display and storage
    • Work closely with Curators and Registrar on exhibition development, planning, design, object security, packing, and storage.
    • Fabricate exhibition mounts, furniture, crates and walls as needed.
    • Assist in gallery installation and deinstallation, as well as lighting.
    • Manage and monitor the daily condition and appearance of exhibition installations and permanent collection galleries.
    • Work with the Registrar, Facilities, and Security departments to help train staff in emergency recovery procedures.
    • Work with the Registrar to coordinate and pack outgoing loans.
    • Keep up to date on new technologies, tools, and archival materials.
    • Manage all supplies and order inventory as needed.

    Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 3-4 years of art handling experience.
    • Significant experience with and understanding of best museum practices in art handling and
    installation.
    • Must work with and train interns and monitor hired professional freelance/contractors.
    • Must have strong carpentry skills.
    • Knowledge of museum lighting is desired.
    • Builds consensus through collaboration, listens and responds appropriately to others, and asks
    questions and offers input for positive results.
    • Adapts behavior and work methods, as needed, in response to new information, changing
    conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
    • Effectively handles multiple demands, shifting priorities, and rapid change.
    • Effective communicator to a wide variety of individuals via email, phone, and in person.
    • Experience with project management, managing others, and working collaboratively with in-
    house staff as well as contractors.

    Salary: $38,000-$40,000
