    Brief Summary of Job Duties
    Under the direction of the Assistant Director of the Art Museum, plans, organizes, directs, and reviews the design and implementation of all University Art Museum exhibitions, collections, and other spatial/graphic design projects. Collaborates with the Director, Assistant Director, Curators, and Advisory committees on matters relating to the planning of exhibitions, and museum acquisitions. Responsible for other activities associated with the design, construction, and installation of exhibitions, including procedures, personnel administration, and budgetary expectations. Designs all graphics for exhibitions (wall vinyl, labels, etc.) and coordinates exhibition graphics with Museum publications. Is responsible for supervising museum workshop, storage and art handling areas, and art shipping and handling activities. Supervises Assistant Designer, Museum Preparator and student work crews, and casual employees hired to assist with exhibitions. Functions as a consultant on problems involving the handling, storage, and display of works of art and artifacts.
    Required Qualifications

    • 4-6 years of demonstrated and documented experience in art exhibition and space design in an art museum or gallery.
    • 1-3 years experience with supervising and working with a team of other creative professionals.
    • Proficient skill in 3D (3 Dimensional) modeling tools such as Google Sketchup (preferred), AutoCAD, or other or other industry accepted software as well as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Expert knowledge of museum exhibition design field and current trends.
    • Knowledge of the principles of conservation, security, and environmental controls, ADA requirements for public buildings, and awareness of visitor needs.
    • Knowledge of exhibition production, related construction work, and preparation of artworks, which includes mounting, matting, framing, packing, transporting, archival storage, and safe use of chemicals.
    • Leadership abilities.
    • Ability to translate a curator's artistic and / or educational vision into an exhibit that meets the artists', public and safety needs.
    • Familiarity with design software; project management skills.
    • Bachelor’s degree in visual arts discipline or equivalent experience and/or training.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's Degree In Fine Arts/Studio or other related discipline.
    • 7 years of demonstrated and documented experience with progressive responsibility in art exhibition and space design, including contemporary art exhibitions.

    Conditions of Employment

    Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

    • 65% Exhibitions - Works collaboratively with the Director and curators to design exhibitions. Translates curatorial and educational exhibit requirements into permanent, temporary, or traveling exhibitions. Develops concepts and designs for exhibitions and other museum projects, including annual Art MFA and undergraduate exhibitions hosted by AD&A Museum. Creates complex installation designs for museum exhibitions, including architectural elements, display cases, framing, or other presentation styles. Develops renderings, scale models, lighting plans, signage, and arrangement of objects consistent with the requirements of the registration and collection manager, or curator. Ensures exhibitions and objects are installed in accordance with programmatic, conservational, and aesthetic requirements. Administers budgets for exhibitions, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits. May direct lower level exhibition specialists, preparators, and other technical staff in the fabrication of components and the installation and disassembly of exhibitions, and in the regional transport, handling, and storage of artworks on loan and in the museum collection.
    • 20% Graphics Production and Publications - Designs exhibition graphics (wall vinyl, labels, banners) and assists with design of in-house museum publications (such as brochures/pamphlets).
    • 5% Travel and Exhibition Preparation - Prepares exhibitions for circulation to other museums, developing design elements and determining methods for the transportation, installation, safety and security of exhibits. Travels to other institutions to instruct and supervise the installation of exhibits organized by the Art, Design & Architecture Museum. Works with artists, donors and prospective donors, museum colleagues and individuals who may be lending/gifting works of art for exhibitions.
    • 5% Storage Design - Designer is responsible for the organization, development and maintenance of a comprehensive storage and preservation program for the collection. Working with the Registrar, responsible for supervising the maintenance and quality of all storage facilities.
    • 5% Supervision and Training - Supervises the training of limited-time and student employees in workshop and installation procedures. Includes training in use and care of shop tools and equipment, construction and painting techniques, set preparation and maintenance, and work procedures used in the museum environment to ensure the safety of works of art. Supervises work schedules, reviews and certifies timesheets, and evaluates job performance.
