Job Description

  • Supervising staff involved with temporary receipts, new accessions, deaccessions, commodity sales, outgoing loans, inventory, maintaining collection records, and special projects relating to the permanent and other collections of artwork at the MFAH
  • Facilitates care and control of collections throughout MFAH campus, including two house museums and off-site storage facilities
  • Assists Chief Registrar in initiation, development and implementation of collection policies and procedures
  • Works with TMS Administrator and IT department to further develop the TMS database to meet the needs of MFAH staff.
  • With the Data Standards Manager, develops standards for data entry specific to MFAH
  • Creates recordkeeping standards and monitors records for consistency and accuracy
  • Regularly auditing database for consistency of entry
  • Generating Quarterly and Annual Accessions Reports
  • Handling legal documents for gifts of artwork (completes tax forms, proffer of gift forms), bequests and promised gifts
  • Overseeing / coordinating acquisition process for large collections coming into collection
  • Developing policies and procedures for and overseeing process of incoming artwork for Gala Auctions and One Great Night


Job Requirements

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of museum registration concepts, principles, standards, practices and procedures
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, attention to details
  • Knowledge of legal matters pertaining to fine art
  • Computer experience, including knowledge of word processing, use of databases, spreadsheets and digital imaging
  • Experience with The Museum System (TMS), the collections database, preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to be diplomatic and to supervise others


Education and Experience:

  • B.A. in Art History, Business or equivalent degree such as Museum Studies
  • Minimum of eight years in the field of museum registration
  • Minimum of three years in a supervisory capacity
