40% EXHIBITION DESIGN
Creates exhibition layouts, translating the content and its educational purpose into an effective visual display. In order to carry out this function, the preparator must be well versed in the latest display technology, understand the underlying theories and aesthetic purposes and preservation of works of art to be able to effectively apply the technology. This position is expected to demonstrate significant knowledge of exhibit design techniques, to include a high level of proficiency with current exhibit design software such as Microsoft Visio.
30% INSTALLATION OF EXHIBITIONS AND OTHER DISPLAYS FOR PERMANENT COLLECTION
The preparator, in close cooperation with the Curators and Registrars, is responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of special exhibitions and displays of the permanent collection. This includes installing the actual art objects, arranging the lighting, fabricating and mounting labels and exhibit graphics as well as installing electrical components and audiovisual programs as necessary. This individual will demonstrate knowledge of basic audiovisual selection and installation such as video kiosks, projectors and sound systems. The position will oversee the programming and adjustment of the museum's lighting program, Paradigm, to include creating new gallery configurations.
20% PRESERVATION, PREPARATION FOR DISPLAY, AND HANDLING OF ART FOR PERMANENT COLLECTION
The Preparator is to be well-versed in the specific requirements of the different media and is responsible for preparation for display and general handling of works of art in a manner that conforms to accepted professional conservation standards. This includes overseeing the preparation team in cutting and assembling mats and frames, constructing cases, pedestals and new walls and other exhibition furniture, and preparing art for travel so that it is not damaged either through movement, handling or changing climate conditions. In addition, the individual will ensure that the galleries are appropriately maintained, by scheduling student workers or team members to perform dusting, vacuuming and maintenance of exhibition furniture. This individual should have advanced knowledge of packing materials and methods to insure safe transit and of crate design and construction for two and three dimensional art objects.
10% ADMINISTRATION, BUDGETING AND PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT OF THE PREPARATION SHOP
This position will provide leadership for the museum preparation team. As a lead worker, this individual will employ administrative skills to include training and supervision of students, section budgeting, delegation of duties and project management. This position will oversee the maintenance and safe operation of preparation shop equipment. This individual will ensure that the preparation team meets its goals in support of the overall museum strategic direction. |
