    The Tallahassee Museum seeks a seasoned and accomplished Director of Collections and Exhibits to join its team in shaping a new vision for its future, building upon its unique 60-year history and values, commitment to its region and propelling its mission into the 21st century.
    Reporting to the Museum’s Vice President of Programs, the Director of Collections and Exhibits leads and coordinates the activities of the Museum's collections and exhibits departments to ensure the growth and care of the collections and the development and presentation of professional exhibits. Supervises collections and exhibits staff and serves as a member of the management team. Directs collections and exhibits programs with total Museum operations in support of Museum policies, goals, and objectives by performing the following duties personally or through others.
    Essential Functions

    • Prepares short term and long range plans for the Museum' s collections and exhibits program based on Museum goals and objectives, including acquisition, storage, interpretation, design, fabrication and research.
    • Prepares collections and exhibits budget and monitors expenditure of funds in those budgets.
    • Guides and directs collections workers, whether staff or volunteer, in collections management, ensuring that professional standards are achieved in the care of the objects and historical buildings including record keeping, documentation, environmental controls and other preservation concerns, security, and regular inspections.
    • Ensures that all collections activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines, as well as American Alliance of Museums (AAM) standards.
    • Acquires objects and specimens in accordance with Collections Plan for addition to the collection through gifts, purchase, or transfer from other institutions. Deaccessions items in accordance with Museum policies.
    • Recommends deaccessions, and collections policies to Vice President of Programs and President/CEO, as well as the Collections & Interpretation Committee of the Board of Trustees in line with the goals and objectives of the Museum.
    • Notifies the Vice President of Programs and the President /CEO of collections and exhibits losses.
    • Speaks on behalf of Museum in civic, business, community, etc. settings.
    • Works with Vice President of Philanthropy in donor stewardship, cultivations, and solicitations.
    • Works with contracted designers, fabricators, and other vendors in the development of exhibits.
    • Plans and implements research in support of collections documentation, management and Museum-wide interpretive program.
    • Participates in research and publishes articles or lectures on results.
    • Serves as museum archivist in preserving the records of the Museum as an institution.
    • Guides and directs exhibits workers, whether staff or volunteer, in exhibit scheduling, development, installation, and maintenance to ensure exhibits are diverse, contain accurate information, and are developed to reach visitors with varying backgrounds.
    • Provides an annual schedule of temporary exhibits. Develops procedures to insure that the exhibits are opened and visitor-ready on schedule, and secure when closed.
    • Provides for the regular evaluation of exhibits and the use of visitor evaluation in planning exhibits to improve the visitor experience of learning from objects and exhibits and to identify areas of interest for new exhibits. Shares relevant information through publishing articles or lectures on results.
    • Prepares proposals for financial support by outside agencies. Administers grant funds and serves as project director for grants awarded for collections and exhibits projects.3
    • Works with other departments to plan and organize public programs and other projects, including initiating planning teams for exhibits. Insures that pertinent collections and exhibit information is communicated to the Museum staff, members, and public through departmental participation in staff meetings, newsletter production, response to reference questions , and assigned media contacts.
    • Keeps informed of museum profession through membership in professional organizations, reading professional and related literature, and by representing the Museum at workshops, conferences, and seminars.
    • Prepares monthly report of departmental activities for the Vice President of Programs and Board of Trustees.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding; coaching, and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


    RequirementsMaster's degree (M. A.) in a related field of study, four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
