Beyond the technical skills and knowledge that the PACCIN Programs and Publications provides for the collections care community there is also professional networking involved. PACCIN hosted three amazing social events last fall in New York City, Cleveland, and Austin. The following are a few reports sent to us from people who attended. They provide us an insight on who attended as well as who collaborated with PACCIN to help make each event a valuable networking experience. We plan on having more social events in 2018 in other parts of the country.

Social Event
New York, New York

PACCIN Advisory Committee Member
As a follow up to the recent PACCIN New York City Social event held on October 18, 2017, I have asked two PACCIN members in attendance to give their comments listed below. Both Aaron Gerth and Zachery Harper assisted me in developing this “event” and I thank them for their commitment to the success of event and support to the PACCN networking mission.
A special thank you is directed to Anne Wilson and Joe Welter of the UOVO Marketing Department for supporting this event and sponsoring the costs of the gourmet pizza truck and craft beer and wine enjoyed by everyone in attendance.
I also want to thank Bianca Ruthven, Mark Wamaling and Kurt Christian of the PACCIN Board whom helped to manage and mingle during the event and welcomed the attendees and helped support the mission of PACCIN with all in attendance.
With over 100+ attendees representing a multi-disciplined of professionals within the Museum and Commercial sector of the NYC region, the evening was a great success. Proof has been in the continuation of networking during the event to which conversations continue to be undertaken on a variety of subjects’ started on that night!

Crew Chief, UOVO, Queens, NY
After attending conference earlier in the year in Ft. Worth, TX I knew immediately that spirit of professional development, high standards and information sharing that PACCIN embodies, was in line with the values UOVO (http://uovo.art) was founded upon.
I soon reached out to Brent Powell, also here in NYC, to discuss hosting an event at our purpose built facility here in Queens. The diversity of the industry here in NYC seemed ripe for a productive exchange between vendors, service providers, galleries, institutions, foundations and private collections.
Indeed it was, as attendees from across the industry were able to connect, reconnect and collaborate on Uovo’s 5 bay west loading dock. I know personally, I was able to meet many new faces and connect with a vendor whose last minute work ensured a projects success earlier this year.
Zach Harper was also on hand to field questions regarding the nitrile glove recycling program that he first brought to our attention and we are happy to be a part of. I'm glad to be active in an organization that can facilitate professional exchange in such a dynamic industry and look forward to seeing what PACCIN has in store for 2018!
Thanks to Brent Powell, Mark Wamaling and Bianca Ruthven from PACCIN for being great partners and to Anne Wilson and Joe Welter form UOVO’s Marketing Department for arranging the pizza truck and drinks.

Collections Preparator / Art Storage Manager, Rubin Museum of Art, New York, NY
The PACCIN New York City Social even held in October at the UOVO (http://uovo.art/) art storage facility in Long Island City, Queens was a notable success!
The event was set in Uovo’s impressive art shipping dock area with multiple bays open to a lovely fall evening. Among the ranks of over 100 attendees one could find Gallery Preparators, Contract Registrars, Art Framers, Collections Managers, Museum Technicians, Art Shipping Coordinators, Truck Drivers, Packers, and Warehouse Specialists to name just a few of the many titles people wear in the Art/Collections Care and field!
Here are some of my evening’s highlights (aside from the delicious craft beers and endless fresh-made pizzas):
- Getting to talk with Clynton Lowry of Art Handler Magazine about his publication and the ambitious Symposium he put on in 2015
- Meeting so many new folks and spreading the word about the nitrile glove recycling program, https://www.kcprofessional.com/rightcycle
- Catching up with a former colleague about our summer adventures and her upcoming currier trip abroad.
Key PACCIN board members were present to answer questions and sign up new members. Mark Wamaling, PACCIN Board Chair, addressed the group along with Uovo Crew Chief, Aaron Gerth.
Summarizing, I think it was apparent to everyone who came to network and trade-talk that this organization, while still organically evolving, is benefitting the industry with a much needed form of organization complete with resources and community.
Huge thanks to the PACCIN organizers for all your volunteered time and commitment and to Uovo for hosting a fabulous event!

Social Event & ICA Tour
Cleveland, Ohio

The Cleveland, Ohio event began at Intermuseum Conservation Association, a lab that serves museums and private collectors from the Midwest region and beyond. The lab’s services include paintings, objects, textiles and paper and book conservation, along with a climate-controlled art storage facility. PACCIN member and Conservation Technician Charlie Eiben gave a tour of the facility, and paper conservator Seth Irwin discussed a current project involving a 19th century map from a nearby city.
Several folks took advantage of the evening hours at Transformer Station Contemporary Art Gallery, located across the street, to see their current exhibitions. Then the group went to nearby Saucy Brew Works for pizzas and beverages, and lots of networking and connecting to other folks in the profession.
This event was generously sponsored by Takiya, Wood-Lee International Art Handler, and ICA Art Conservation.

I attended the PACCIN event in Cleveland a few weeks ago. I had an objective and that was to meet new people and to introduce myself to more museum folks. My business is almost 100% networking and this event really helped me.
I was able to meet folks behind the scenes at Cleveland Museum of Art, I was able to sit down for 30 minutes and talk with Joel Alpern from Cleveland Museum of Natural History. My relationship with Ray Juaire from MOCA Cleveland developed further just by sitting down and chatting over a beverage and pizza. The world that we all live in (museum world) it a very tight knit group and face to face is the best way to get to know each other and help each other. I would attend and sponsor another event in Cleveland anytime it might be here.

As if to kick off the holiday party season, PACCIN had its first-time social event in Austin Texas on December 14. Twyla graciously hosted the 20-24 attendees in their art gallery and galley. The event was also made possible by the generous commitment and excitement from two local art services sponsors: ArtCrue and Vault Fine Art Services. It was a great surprise to see professional guests from Dallas, as well as meeting an artist who came in based on social media postings, plus connecting with a great selection of other professional art handlers from around Austin.
